"I am known for a life spent in the struggle for freedom, and freedom includes the freedom of religion"
About this Quote
The hinge is the second clause: “and freedom includes the freedom of religion.” On its face, it’s liberal housekeeping, a reminder that rights travel in a bundle. In Fallaci’s late-career context - post-9/11 Europe, rising anxiety about Islam, immigration, and multiculturalism - it reads more like a boundary marker than a warm embrace. The subtext: defending “freedom” means defending a secular civic order that can be pressured, in her view, by religious demands. She frames herself as a guardian of the Enlightenment, but the phrasing quietly shifts the debate from specific communities and policies to an abstract principle where she has home-court advantage.
There’s a tactical irony here. Fallaci, famous for confrontational interviews and polemics, uses “freedom of religion” not primarily to protect religion from the state, but to protect the state (and its cultural majority) from religion’s political reach. It’s a sentence built to sound expansive while doing the work of exclusion: if freedom is the brand, she gets to decide what counts as its authentic product.
