There is a whole band’s worth of diplomacy packed into Vitous’s phrasing. “I am more of a solo bass player” is a self-definition, but it’s also a quiet refusal: not ego so much as identity. He’s staking out a musical philosophy where the bass isn’t just the floorboards of the song, it’s a speaking role. In jazz and fusion, that choice matters. A “solo bass player” hears the instrument as a co-lead voice, pushing harmony, arguing with the drummer, making the tune elastic.
