The subtext is also defensive. “I am not a prisoner” reads like a rebuttal to moralists (and perhaps to his own biography) who cast porn as compulsion, degradation, or confession. Yet “although I write about being a prisoner” concedes that captivity sells: the fantasy of restraint, the rhetoric of transgression, the reliable drama of wanting what you “shouldn’t.” Goldstein doesn’t just publish sex; he publishes the story that sex overwhelms. He wants credit for naming the trap without being caught in it.
