The phrasing “until they do something that’s other than” sets an almost impossible standard. Any union exists to advance its members’ interests; demanding they act against that is like demanding a prosecutor be neutral about crime. The subtext is a bait-and-switch: Christie can claim openness to cooperation while defining “good faith” as surrender. It’s a classic political posture that reads as toughness to voters exhausted by institutional gridlock.

Context matters. In the post-recession era, public-sector unions became convenient villains in debates over budgets, taxes, and benefits, especially in states where pensions were a growing line item. Christie’s brand - combative, press-conference-ready, contemptuous of insider politeness - thrives on this kind of moral contrast: taxpayers vs. insiders, students vs. “the union,” common sense vs. “special interests.”

The irony is that “self-interest” is the currency of politics, including Christie’s own. But by accusing the union of it in stark, almost prosecutorial language, he turns a negotiation into a referendum on character - and tries to win the room before the numbers ever show up.
