Life & Mortality Quote by Guru Nanak

"I am not the born; how can there be either birth or death for me?"

About this Quote

A calm little grenade disguised as metaphysics: Guru Nanak refuses the basic paperwork of human life. By declaring, "I am not the born", he isn’t dodging biology so much as puncturing the ego’s favorite storyline - that we are discrete, fragile characters launched at birth and erased at death. The intent is surgical: loosen the reader’s grip on identity as a temporary body with a personal timeline, and redirect attention to something prior to - and larger than - the self we narrate.

The subtext is quietly radical for its era and still disruptive now. If you can’t be "born", then the caste-marked social order that assigns value at birth loses its spiritual authority. If death can’t take you, then fear-based religion - the trading of rituals for security - starts to look like a bad bargain. Nanak’s line works because it removes the usual levers of control (status, anxiety, salvation-as-transaction) without needing to shout.

Context matters: Nanak is writing at the crossroads of Hindu and Islamic devotional worlds, where arguments about soul, rebirth, and divine unity were not abstract parlor games but social weather. His Sikh vision insists on a formless, timeless One and a life of remembrance (nam) and ethical labor, not escape. The sentence performs that worldview: it doesn’t offer comfort by denial; it offers freedom by relocation - from the biography of "me" to the reality that doesn’t start or stop.
