Forster is tired of the theater serving him narrative fast food: the tidy triangle, the polite portion size, the same romantic geometry reheated until it passes for drama. His line about “one man and two women” isn’t prudish complaint or mere boredom; it’s an attack on a whole cultural habit of shrinking life to a single, legible conflict. The “full theatrical meal” metaphor does a lot of work. It implies appetite, nourishment, even moral obligation: art should feed us a richer sense of human possibility, not just satisfy the market’s sweet tooth for rivalry and resolution.

The subtext is social as much as aesthetic. Forster, writing from the pressure-cooker of early 20th-century English respectability (and from the closet, though he rarely said so directly), recognizes how the stage can become an instrument of simplification: desire made safe by being heterosexual, bounded, and competitive; society rendered as background wallpaper. “Multiplicity of life” is his quiet manifesto against the era’s preference for narrow plots that reinforce narrow norms. He wants more rooms in the house: more classes, more contradictions, more people with their own gravitational pull, not just satellites to a central male protagonist.

What makes the complaint sting is its plainness. No grand theory, just a weary palate. It’s the voice of someone who believes realism isn’t about reproducing surfaces, but about honoring how crowded, unmanageable, and gloriously overpopulated real experience actually is.
