"I am the original... Those are my disciples"
About this Quote
The word "original" does a lot of work. It frames Irvin less as a former player with highlights and more as a prototype: the template for a certain kind of wide receiver stardom - physical, flamboyant, alpha, built for cameras as much as coverage. "Disciples" turns the next generation into a congregation. That’s funny in its audacity, but it’s also strategic: it recasts imitation as proof of influence. If others are doing a version of you, then your prime didn’t end; it multiplied.
The subtext is insecurity dressed as dominance, the familiar athlete’s anxiety about being reduced to nostalgia. Irvin played in an era when receivers were allowed to be punished and when the Cowboys were both a dynasty and a soap opera. Modern receivers get more space, more stats, more branding opportunities - and often more praise. This line is a preemptive correction: don’t mistake the upgraded era for upgraded originality.
It’s also a reminder that sports debates are really fights over lineage. Irvin isn’t asking to be remembered politely. He’s demanding to be credited like an originator.
