"I became involved in photography when I was about thirteen years old"
About this Quote
The phrasing is plain, almost disarmingly so. “Became involved” dodges the romance of “fell in love with” or “was inspired by,” as if he’s describing joining a neighborhood committee. That understatement is the tell. Nimoy is signaling craft over charisma: photography as a discipline, a way to stand slightly apart from the scene and still participate in it. The camera becomes a socially acceptable mask for a shy kid, and later, a counterweight to acting’s constant exposure. Actors are watched; photographers do the watching.
The context is also generational. A teen in the mid-1940s picking up a camera is stepping into a modern language of selfhood just as mass media is swelling. Long before Spock, Nimoy is practicing framing, distance, and attention - the same tools that would later let him navigate celebrity without being swallowed by it. The subtext is simple: the “second career” was there first.
