Daily Inspiration Quote by Ted Shawn

"I believe that dance communicates man's deepest, highest and most truly spiritual thoughts and emotions far better than words, spoken or written"

About this Quote

Ted Shawn is making a bid for dance as a serious language, not decorative entertainment - and he does it by picking a fight with the prestige medium: words. In early 20th-century America, where high culture still leaned on literature, sermons, and speeches to prove its depth, Shawn flips the hierarchy. If you want the deepest stuff - the “most truly spiritual thoughts and emotions” - stop worshipping the sentence. Watch the body.

The intent is partly evangelism, partly defense brief. Modern concert dance in the U.S. was still earning legitimacy, and male dancers in particular were treated as suspicious, unserious, or unmanly. Shawn’s phrasing (“man’s deepest, highest”) reads like a strategic rebuttal: dance is not frivolous, not feminine, not mere spectacle. It is the highest human register, a direct line to interior life. That’s also why he leans on “spiritual,” a word that smuggles dance into the realm of the sacred without needing a church’s permission.

The subtext is a critique of rationalist culture. Words are often treated as clean, controllable, and therefore trustworthy - which is exactly their limitation here. Shawn implies that language edits experience as it translates it. Dance, by contrast, keeps the mess: breath, gravity, tremor, restraint. It communicates through risk and presence, not explanation.

There’s an irony in how he must use words to argue for wordlessness. That tension is the point: he’s not rejecting language so much as exposing its ceiling, insisting that some truths don’t want to be paraphrased - they want to be witnessed.
