"I did not think much what I was writing them for, except that I knew I wanted my next novel to be in some less conventional form than straight narrative"
About this Quote
The subtext is a quiet rebellion against the tyranny of plot. Mosley isn’t saying he has nothing to say; he’s saying the usual container is the problem. “Less conventional form” hints at a writer treating structure as argument. Form becomes a way of thinking on the page: fragmented, recursive, essayistic, polyphonic - whatever refuses the illusion that experience arrives in tidy causal order. It’s also a small admission of risk. When you step away from straight narrative, you give up some of fiction’s easiest pleasures (momentum, clarity, catharsis) and gamble that your reader will follow you into a different kind of attention.
Context matters: Mosley comes out of mid-20th-century British fiction, when the novel is crowded with experiments responding to war, political disillusionment, and the erosion of grand certainties. His intent reads less like avant-garde posturing than a practical need: if the world is incoherent, why should the novel pretend otherwise?
