"I don't dictate, you don't dictate to Stevie Wonder, not successfully"
About this Quote
The syntax does work, too. The repetition of “dictate” turns the word into something ugly, managerial, and petty - the language of suits and control rooms rather than studios. Then the tag “not successfully” adds a sly aftertaste: people do try to dictate to Stevie Wonder (to any great artist), but they fail. The world is full of attempted puppeteers; the point is that real talent slips the strings.
Contextually, it reads like Lee protecting the sanctity of authorship in a system built to dilute it. Filmmaking and music are collaborative, but Lee is drawing a bright line between collaboration and coercion. He’s not arguing for ego; he’s arguing for authority that comes from vision - the kind that doesn’t need permission and can’t be managed into being.
