The second clause sharpens the provocation. “I haven’t had great literary influences in my life” reads like a humblebrag turned inside out: if the “great” books weren’t what formed him, then something else did. Puig’s work famously metabolizes mass culture, cinema, gossip, melodrama, and the overheard cadences of everyday speech. In that context, the quote becomes a cultural argument: why should the novel’s raw material be restricted to what universities bless? He implies that the modern imagination is trained as much by screens and popular genres as by “literature,” and that those inputs aren’t lesser, just less policed.

There’s also a tactical innocence to it. Puig, writing from Argentina while engaging global forms, sidesteps the colonial pressure to cite European masters. If you can’t trace his models, you can’t easily domesticate him. The statement protects his aesthetic: hybrid, high-low, and deliberately hard to credential.
