Daily Inspiration Quote by J. R. R. Tolkien

"I don't know half of you, half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you, half as well as you deserve"

About this Quote

Charm as misdirection: Bilbo Baggins steps up to give a birthday speech and slips a social grenade into a ribboned box. The line is built like a hobbit hole of clauses - cozy on the outside, structurally tricky once you walk in. Tolkien’s genius here is the double-edged arithmetic. Each “half” sounds modest, even self-deprecating, but the sentence keeps flipping its own valuation until you realize it contains both an apology and an insult, and you can’t quite prove which side you’re on.

The intent is tactical politeness. Bilbo is about to vanish, so he uses humor to destabilize the room and soften the shock. In Bag End society, where food, genealogy, and reputation function as currency, this is the safest way to say something dangerously personal: I’m fond of you, I’m irritated by you, and I’m leaving anyway. The subtext reads like an exit memo delivered with a grin. Some people haven’t been truly known; others aren’t truly liked; most listeners will assume they’re in the favored category because that’s how social vanity works.

Context matters: this is The Fellowship of the Ring’s opening, where Tolkien lulls us in with pastoral comedy before the story turns toward surveillance, coercion, and war. The line performs that tonal pivot in miniature. It’s a joke with a shadow, a reminder that even in the Shire, conviviality has politics, and kindness can be a cover for independence. Bilbo doesn’t just entertain; he asserts control over the narrative of his departure.
