Daily Inspiration Quote by Alexander Kluge

"I don't pay attention to target audiences and therefore I often hear that I am a ratings killer, somebody who fundamentally doesn't care whether one person is watching or an entire soccer stadium"

About this Quote

Kluge frames indifference as both a shield and a provocation: if he refuses the logic of the “target audience,” then the industry’s favorite weapon - ratings - can’t fully wound him. The line bristles with a double awareness. He knows exactly how television and mainstream cinema measure “value,” and he also knows that opting out of those metrics reads, to gatekeepers, as arrogance or incompetence. “Ratings killer” is the insult he’s been handed; he repeats it with the cool of someone turning a smear into a manifesto.

The soccer stadium image is the tell. It’s mass culture’s fantasy of total capture: a crowd synchronized in attention, emotion, consumption. Kluge rejects that fantasy not because he hates audiences, but because he distrusts what happens to art when “everyone” is the brief. The subtext is less “I don’t care if you watch” than “I won’t engineer your watching.” His stance is anti-format, anti-demographic, anti-optimization - a refusal of the contemporary feedback loop where art becomes content and content becomes a product tuned to retention.

Context matters: Kluge comes out of postwar German culture and the New German Cinema, where “public” media was also a battleground for memory, responsibility, and political education. His work often treats viewers as citizens with agency, not consumers to be held hostage by plot. The quote’s sting is that he’s describing a moral choice in economic language: he’d rather risk silence than trade complexity for applause.
