In the postwar art world, geometry had been marketed as a kind of ethical style guide - straight lines as discipline, reduction as honesty, the grid as proof you’d transcended messier human appetites. Judd won fame in the minimalist orbit where that rhetoric was constant, and his impatience here reads like an insider calling out the brand strategy.

Notice the double move. First, he rejects the label itself: “I don’t like to call it that.” Classification becomes a trap, a way critics and institutions stabilize work into movements, then sell the movement back to the public as inevitability.
