The subtext is a rebuke to two habits of political culture. First, the insider sport of positioning, where being “centrist” reads as automatically reasonable and being “left” or “right” reads as automatically suspect. Second, the moral outsourcing that comes with labels: if you can call something progressive or conservative, you can stop asking whether it’s fair, effective, or humane. Context matters: Wellstone was a Minnesota senator who built his career on labor rights, anti-poverty politics, and a willingness to be out of step with his party’s caution (most famously opposing the Iraq War authorization in 2002).
