"I don't think you should feel about a film. You should feel about a woman, not a movie. You can't kiss a movie"
About this Quote
The gendered contrast is doing deliberate work. “A woman” here isn’t a romantic ideal so much as shorthand for reciprocal reality: another person who can refuse you, surprise you, demand something back. A movie can’t. It can’t touch you, and it can’t be touched in return. Godard’s subtext is anti-consumerist and anti-sentimental: if your relationship to art ends at tears in the dark, you’ve confused response with relationship, sensation with intimacy.
Context matters because Godard’s whole career is built on making films that interrupt easy feeling. The jump cuts, the direct addresses, the essays disguised as plots - they’re engineered to keep you awake, to force thought alongside emotion. This quote is his contrarian mission statement: cinema shouldn’t mimic love; it should irritate you into seeing how love, desire, and ideology get packaged and sold.
