Creativity Quote by Andrew Eldritch

"I don't want people to come and see our gig because of the magnificent things I'm doing with my hips, but it's their evening, you know. They have to have fun. I'm a little bit naive"

About this Quote

Andrew Eldritch is staging a sly tug-of-war between ego and audience, and he does it in the offhand register of someone who knows exactly how absurd the whole spectacle can be. The joke lands in the first clause: the frontman as reluctant object of desire, mocking the rock-star economy where charisma gets billed as talent and bodies become part of the setlist. “Magnificent things I’m doing with my hips” is deliberately overblown, almost draggy in its self-parody, puncturing the myth of the magnetic singer even as it acknowledges the myth’s power.

Then he pivots to something almost tender: “it’s their evening.” That’s the real tell. Eldritch frames performance less as self-expression than as a rented ritual, a transaction with an emotional obligation. People aren’t showing up to witness artistic purity; they’re showing up to feel alive for two hours. His insistence that “they have to have fun” carries both generosity and resignation, the sense that a live gig is judged not by intention but by impact.

The closing line, “I’m a little bit naive,” works as camouflage. It softens what’s actually a hard-eyed awareness of performance as managed illusion: the artist pretending not to understand the machinery while expertly naming it. Coming from a post-punk/goth context that often performs alienation, this is Eldritch admitting the paradox: even the cool, distant frontman is still in the entertainment business, still responsible for giving the crowd a night worth remembering.
