Politics & Power Quote by Strom Thurmond

"I fully recognize and appreciate the many substantial contributions of black Americans and other minorities to the creation and preservation and development of our great nation"

About this Quote

A sentence like this is built to sound like progress while doing as little of it as possible. Thurmond’s phrasing performs gratitude as a civic ritual: “fully recognize and appreciate” is the language of commendation, not commitment. It offers praise at a safe distance, positioning the speaker as the arbiter of who gets acknowledged, when, and on what terms. The choice to celebrate minorities for helping “create” and “preserve” the nation folds dissent and struggle into a single patriotic blur, converting demands for equality into evidence of national greatness.

The subtext sits in the architecture of the sentence. “Black Americans and other minorities” is both inclusive and flattening, bundling distinct histories into a tidy category of “contributors,” as if the primary political value of marginalized people is what they have added to an existing project. The repeated “and” chains (creation and preservation and development) create a swelling cadence that mimics moral seriousness, but it’s also a rhetorical fog: big nouns, no verbs of repair. There’s no mention of exclusion, violence, or policy, only an abstract “our great nation” that remains untroubled by the costs of that greatness.

Context makes the intent legible. Thurmond was a central figure in segregationist politics, famous for a 24-hour filibuster against the 1957 Civil Rights Act and a career spent resisting federal civil-rights enforcement before later recalibrations. Read against that record, the line functions as reputational insurance: a way to gesture toward reconciliation without conceding wrongdoing or endorsing structural change. It’s a classic Washington move: upgrade the optics, keep the power arrangement intact.
