Art & Creativity Quote by Robert E. Howard

"I had neither expert aid nor advice. I studied no courses in writing; until a year or so ago, I never read a book by anybody advising writers how to write"

About this Quote

There is a defiant loneliness baked into Howard's boast: no workshops, no mentors, no rulebook. It reads less like a confession than a staking of territory. In a culture that already loved the myth of the self-made man, Howard frames authorship as something earned through brute force and private obsession, not credentialed through gatekeepers. The line flatters instinct over instruction, talent over technique, hunger over polish.

The subtext is partly practical. Howard wrote in the pulp economy, where speed mattered and market feedback arrived in rejection slips and paychecks, not in seminars. "Expert aid" sounds like a luxury product; he positions himself outside it, both because he often was and because exclusion can be converted into identity. If the canon and the academy won't validate you, you can claim a different kind of legitimacy: rawness, velocity, a personal engine that doesn't need permission.

It also works as a defensive charm against criticism. If his prose is rough, the roughness becomes proof of authenticity, not a flaw. By noting he only "until a year or so ago" avoided craft advice, he sneaks in a quiet pivot: even the hardheaded natural eventually glances at the manuals. That detail keeps the swagger from tipping into caricature. Howard is selling independence, but he is also acknowledging the grind behind it, the idea that writing is made in the doing, not in the lecture hall.
