Parenting & Family Quote by Roseanne Barr

"I hate every human being on earth. I feel that everyone is beneath me, and I feel they should all worship me. That's what I told my kids. I think I must have been Adolf Hitler in a past life"

About this Quote

Roseanne Barr doesn’t lob a provocation like this to be believed; she lobs it to make you flinch, then notice you flinched. The line is a deliberately grotesque self-portrait: misanthropy, superiority, and the demand for worship, stacked so high it becomes cartoonish. That’s the engine of her comedy persona at its most corrosive - taking a private, shameful impulse (contempt, resentment, grandiosity) and inflating it until it reads like a confession and a parody at once.

The “told my kids” detail is the shrewdest knife-twist. It drags the bit out of abstract rant and into domestic space, where power and harm live. The joke isn’t just “I’m awful”; it’s “imagine that attitude normalized as family doctrine,” which makes the audience complicit for a second, laughing at something that shouldn’t be funny. Barr has always played with the American appetite for the abrasive truth-teller, the person who says what others only think. Here she’s testing how far that license goes.

The Hitler reference is also doing double duty: it’s a taboo detonator and a moral shortcut. By jumping straight to the worst possible analogy, she tries to control the frame - if it’s “Hitler,” it must be satire, right? But that move also exposes a hunger for attention so intense it risks collapsing the joke into mere spectacle. The subtext is less about Nazism than about fame’s feedback loop: outrage as oxygen, self-mythologizing as brand, and the uneasy question of when “just kidding” stops being a shield.
