Life & Mortality Quote by Ron Chernow

"I have developed a very strong partiality for the dead: they don't talk back, they don't sue, and they don't have angry relatives"

About this Quote

Chernow’s line is a biographer’s confession dressed up as a punchline: the dead make ideal subjects because they can’t ruin your narrative in real time. The humor works by treating biography like customer service gone wrong. Living people are “clients” with demands, lawyers, and fragile pride; the dead are, blessedly, off the complaint hotline. It’s funny because it’s a little cruel, and because it carries the weary competence of someone who has spent years negotiating the boundary between storytelling and liability.

The subtext is less morbid than pragmatic. Chernow is acknowledging the hidden machinery of modern nonfiction: permissions, fact-checking, reputational blowback, and the threat of litigation. A historian can be meticulous and still get punished by a subject’s correction campaign or a family’s grievance-industrial complex. By listing “angry relatives” alongside lawsuits, he’s winking at the way legacy is policed by survivors who often want myth, not texture. That last clause also quietly admits the ethical minefield: even when your subject is dead, someone is still guarding the brand.

Context matters because Chernow is famous for big, consequential lives (Hamilton, Washington, Grant) told with novelistic momentum. His joke is partly a defense of method: distance allows frankness. If your goal is to render power honestly, you need subjects who can’t pressure you into softer edges. The irony, of course, is that the dead do talk back - through archives. Chernow’s “partiality” isn’t for silence; it’s for evidence that can’t file an injunction.
