Art & Creativity Quote by Robert Service

"I have some friends, some honest friends, and honest friends are few; My pipe of briar, my open fire, A book that's not too new"

About this Quote

Service is staging a snug little rebellion: a life pared down to the things that don’t betray you. The line opens with a pointed stutter - “some friends, some honest friends” - as if he’s weighing people in his hand and finding most of them light. “Honest friends are few” lands like a shrug that’s also a warning. In Service’s world, companionship is real, but scarce, and you’re a fool if you build your happiness on a crowd.

Then he pivots to objects: briar pipe, open fire, a book “that’s not too new.” The subtext is almost slyly anti-modern. Newness isn’t progress here; it’s noise, fashion, instability. An oldish book has already survived its hype cycle. A fire and a pipe promise steadiness: rituals you can repeat when weather, money, or luck turn.

Context matters. Service wrote out of frontier and working-life experience - the Yukon mythology he helped popularize is full of temporary camps, hard men, and relationships tested by scarcity. In that setting, trust becomes a currency, and scarcity makes you practical. This is a poet’s version of bunkhouse philosophy, but polished: the internal rhyme and list-like cadence make the modest inventory feel like a manifesto.

What makes it work is the emotional economy. He doesn’t ask you to romanticize solitude; he offers a consolation prize that’s convincing. If people disappoint, warmth, habit, and a good (not trendy) story can still keep you human.
