Politics & Power Quote by Hosni Mubarak

"I have this to say to the people: go the polls and vote for the candidate of your choice... This is your responsibility; do not neglect it"

About this Quote

A strongman’s favorite costume is the democrat’s vocabulary. Mubarak’s call to “go the polls” lands, on paper, like civic virtue: participation as duty, neglect as moral failure. In Egypt’s late-20th-century political theater, though, that language reads less like empowerment than like choreography. The line doesn’t argue for competing visions; it sanctifies the act of voting itself, treating the process as an end rather than a means. That’s a tell: when outcomes are managed, legitimacy has to be manufactured, and “responsibility” becomes a pressure tactic.

The most revealing phrase is “the candidate of your choice.” It’s an invitation framed as freedom, but it quietly shifts attention away from whether real choice exists. Mubarak’s era was defined by emergency laws, constrained opposition, and elections widely criticized for irregularities. In that setting, urging turnout isn’t about opening the political field; it’s about filling the stadium so the broadcast looks convincing. High participation rates can be converted into a mandate, a statistic that travels well abroad and calms nerves at home.

There’s also a paternal register: “I have this to say to the people.” The leader speaks, the public complies. The citizen is cast not as a sovereign actor but as a participant in the state’s script, where abstention is framed as irresponsibility rather than protest. The subtext is a bargain: perform democracy, and the regime can claim consent. The intent is less to invite dissent than to domesticate it inside a controlled ritual.
