Art & Creativity Quote by Barnett Newman

"I hope that my painting has the impact of giving someone, as it did me, the feeling of his own totality, of his own separateness, of his own individuality"

About this Quote

Newman isn’t selling “beauty” or even “expression.” He’s aiming for a jolt of selfhood. When he talks about “totality” and “separateness,” he’s describing the moment his large, spare canvases are designed to trigger: you’re not invited to decode symbols so much as to register your own presence in front of something that refuses to entertain you. The painting becomes a kind of pressure field. It doesn’t depict the individual; it produces one.

The phrasing is tellingly possessive: “his own” repeated like a mantra, as if the self has to be reclaimed from somewhere else. Mid-century America is the background hum here: mass culture, conformity, the postwar crowd. Abstract Expressionism often gets framed as heroic personal gesture, but Newman’s rhetoric is almost anti-confessional. He wanted the viewer, not the artist, to have the experience. The famous “zips” and expanses of color don’t narrate a story; they set a scale. Stand close and the work functions less like an image than an environment, forcing an encounter with your body, your distance, your aloneness.

There’s also an ethical edge hiding in the metaphysics. “Individuality” isn’t a lifestyle preference in Newman’s world; it’s a hard-won fact, a dignity. After the catastrophes that shadow his era, the insistence on separateness reads as a refusal of erasure. The impact he’s after is almost civic: a painting as a machine for making viewers feel unrepeatable, unabsorbed, intact.
