"I know for certain of only one commandment, one obligation, that God imposes upon us, and that is to be compassionate toward other human beings"
About this Quote
The subtext is a rebuke to the way faith so often gets drafted as an identity badge. Bikel doesn’t argue against God; he argues against the human appetite for turning God into a megaphone for our preferences. Compassion becomes the only obligation worth staking certainty on because it’s the only one that survives translation across communities. It can’t be hoarded by one sect or converted into a boundary line without sounding self-contradictory.
There’s also a historical echo. Bikel, a Jewish immigrant who lived through the 20th century’s brutal proof that “higher principles” can be recruited for cruelty, is essentially choosing the one religious claim that resists propaganda. “Toward other human beings” is pointedly non-selective: no in-group clause, no moral accounting of who “deserves” it. In a public culture hooked on moral performance, he offers something more demanding: compassion as an active posture, not a sentiment, and certainly not a slogan.
