That phrasing matters because Argento is a director whose best work (Deep Red, Suspiria) operates like a fever dream with impeccable craft. The plots can be baroque, even flimsy, but the films feel authored in the muscles: color as anxiety, sound as assault, architecture as trap. “From the soul” is his way of legitimizing sensation over statement. There’s also a sly defense embedded here. Horror has long been patronized as empty genre, expected to justify itself with allegory. Argento refuses to apologize. He’s not saying his films are meaningless; he’s saying their meaning is embodied, not extractable into a slogan. In the context of postwar European art cinema and the Italian giallo tradition, it’s a declaration of autonomy: the director as dreamer rather than lecturer, the audience as participant rather than student. The “soul” isn’t piety. It’s personal risk, the sense that something untranslatable has been smuggled onto the screen.
