Time & Perspective Quote by Karl Lagerfeld

"I like today and perhaps a little future still, but the past is really something I'm not interested in. So, as far as I'm concerned, I like only the past of things and people I don't know. When I know, I don't care because I knew how it was"

About this Quote

Lagerfeld’s charm was always edged with a frost: a man who lived by reference points yet refused nostalgia as a sentiment. In this quote, he’s doing a neat trick of elitist pragmatism. He grants “today” a guarded affection, allows “perhaps a little future,” then dismisses the past not as painful but as boring. That’s the tell. For Lagerfeld, memory isn’t a refuge; it’s clutter. The past becomes valuable only when it’s safely impersonal: “things and people I don’t know.” History, in other words, is best as an archive you can raid, not a relationship that can make demands.

That stance maps perfectly onto his cultural role. As a designer, especially one who ran Chanel like a perpetual motion machine, he trafficked in the aura of heritage while constantly retooling it. He could quote a silhouette from the 1920s, but he wouldn’t let the 1920s tell him what to feel. The subtext is control: if you lived it, it can disappoint you; if you didn’t, you can curate it. Unlived pasts are aesthetic gold because they’re pliable. Lived pasts are just receipts.

There’s also a sly defense mechanism here. “When I know, I don’t care because I knew how it was” reads like arrogance, but it’s also insulation against sentimentality, regret, even grief. It’s the worldview of someone who treats time like fabric: you cut what you need, discard the rest, keep moving.
