"I like working on things that are very different and that involve different disguises"
About this Quote
“Disguises” does the heavier lifting. On its face it’s craft talk - accents, wigs, posture, the whole toolbox. Underneath, it hints at something more personal: performance as liberation, not concealment. Coming out publicly, moving between stage and screen, comedy and menace, Cumming has built a persona that’s fluid but never vague. He’s not chasing invisibility; he’s chasing transformation. Disguise becomes a way to tell the truth slant, to access parts of the self that everyday identity edits out.
There’s also a sly challenge to celebrity culture embedded here. Stars are supposed to be legible, consistent, easily packaged into a thumbnail. Cumming suggests the opposite: that the job is to be unreadable on purpose, to keep the audience slightly off-balance. It’s why his work can feel both theatrical and intimate - he treats character like a mask you don’t hide behind, but one you use to move through rooms you otherwise couldn’t enter.
