"I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're beautiful. Everybody's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic"
About this Quote
The intent is partly provocation - a deadpan way to scandalize earnestness - but it’s also a manifesto for Pop. Plastic is modern material and modern personality: mass-produced, glossy, replaceable, photogenic. In the 1960s-80s, when authenticity became a cultural religion, Warhol made a counter-faith out of replication and branding. “I want to be plastic” reads as self-erasure and self-invention at once: if identity is already manufactured, why pretend otherwise? Better to become the product on purpose, to control the terms of your own commodification.
Context matters: Hollywood is the factory of images, and Warhol ran his own Factory back in New York. Loving LA is professional recognition. He’s saluting a city that perfected what he was making into art - celebrity as an object, desire as a surface, personality as packaging. The subtext is both admiration and critique, but Warhol keeps them fused, because that fusion is the point: in America’s dream machine, the shiny lie is also the shared truth.
