Wit & Attitude Quote by Maya Angelou

"I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass"

About this Quote

Angelou doesn’t bother with dainty empowerment here; she gives you a fistful of lapels. The line works because it splices two registers that rarely get to share the same breath: the almost old-fashioned image of a "young girl" (small, presumed breakable, socially managed) and the blunt, profane diagnosis of reality. That whiplash is the point. Angelou is refusing the sentimental script that tells girls to be good, patient, grateful, quiet, and then rewards them with safety. Safety, she implies, is not the default setting of the world.

The intent is protective, even maternal, but not soft. "Love to see" signals delight in audacity, a kind of witness-bearing. She’s not describing abstract self-actualization; she’s rooting for a physical, visible act of taking space. "Grab the world" is confrontational, not aspirational. It’s a directive to treat opportunity like something that will slip away if you don’t seize it.

Subtext: Angelou is talking about power and permission. For Black women especially, "young girl" can be a category the culture uses to infantilize, to deny authority, to punish confidence as arrogance. When she says life is a bitch, she’s not being edgy; she’s naming the cruelty of systems that romantic language tends to obscure. The profanity functions like a door slam against respectability politics: you don’t have to sound polished to be right.

Context matters because Angelou’s career was built on transforming survival into speech. This is resilience without the Hallmark gloss: not "stay positive", but "stay standing, and hit back."
