Motivation Quote by Honus Wagner

"I never have been sick. I don't even know what it means to be sick. I hear other players say they have a cold. I just don't know what it would feel like to have a cold - I never had one"

About this Quote

Honus Wagner isn’t describing a medical miracle so much as performing a specific kind of athletic masculinity: the body as unbreakable machine, the player as immune to ordinary weakness. The line lands because it’s both boast and bait. By claiming he “doesn’t even know what it means to be sick,” Wagner isn’t just saying he’s healthy; he’s implying that sickness is partly a choice, a lapse in toughness, a failure of will. The subtext is an accusation aimed at the clubhouse: other guys get colds because they’re softer, less disciplined, less Wagner.

That posture makes sense in early 20th-century baseball, where the mythology of the “iron man” wasn’t branding so much as job security. Medical science was cruder, player protections were thin, and admitting you were unwell could look like malingering. Wagner’s era also prized stoicism; pain and illness weren’t only private facts but public tests of character. So he narrates himself as beyond the category altogether: “I never had one.” It’s hyperbole with a purpose, the kind of exaggeration that dares you to challenge it.

There’s also something revealingly anxious under the swagger. If being sick is unthinkable, then vulnerability is unacceptable. Wagner’s certainty becomes a superstition: name the weakness and you invite it in. The quote is less a health report than a cultural script for greatness at the time - deny the body, dominate the story.
