Life & Wisdom Quote by Anita Loos

"I once witnessed more ardent emotions between men at an Elks' Rally in Pasadena than they could ever have felt for the type of woman available to an Elk"

About this Quote

Loos lands the punch by pretending she’s simply reporting an observation, then quietly detonating the era’s whole apparatus of “respectable” masculinity. The Elks lodge - civic, fraternal, boosterish - was built to look like wholesome male fellowship, a place where sentiment could be safely rerouted into handshakes, rituals, and patriotic backslapping. Loos sharpens that into a scandalous comparison: the real heat, she implies, isn’t aimed at women at all.

The line works because it’s double-edged. On one edge, it’s a snob’s jab at the Elks’ social ecosystem: “the type of woman available to an Elk” isn’t a person so much as a class marker, a faintly contemptuous category. Loos is skewering the clubman’s romantic imagination as limited by his own social reach. On the other edge, it’s a sly commentary on male intimacy in public life. Men, permitted to be florid only in sanctioned settings (parades, rallies, lodges), pour their ardor into each other - then insist it’s not desire, just fellowship. Loos doesn’t have to say “repression” or “homoerotic subtext”; she makes you feel the pressure valve.

Context matters: Loos, a modernist-era satirist of gender performance (and a keen observer of how money and status choreograph romance), uses Pasadena’s sunny respectability as the perfect backdrop. The joke isn’t merely that Elks are ridiculous; it’s that the culture trains men to perform passion everywhere except where it’s supposedly supposed to go.
