"I put myself on the line with my truth and my sexuality. That is my choice. My choice"
About this Quote
The double hit of "truth" and "sexuality" is doing careful work. Truth is the moral claim, sexuality the cultural tripwire. Paired together, they insist that being openly queer (or refusing a tidy label) isn’t a provocative add-on to one’s “real” self; it’s part of the same lived honesty. Heche is pushing back against the Hollywood habit of treating sexuality as a PR category: marketable when it’s vague, punishable when it’s specific.
Then she clamps down on interpretation with the repetition: "That is my choice. My choice". It’s defensive, almost juridical, the cadence of someone who has had agency rewritten as pathology by tabloids, executives, and talk-show hosts. The subtext is less “look at me” than “stop owning me.” In the late-90s and early-2000s celebrity ecosystem, women’s desire was routinely narrated by everyone except the woman herself. Heche’s insistence on choice is a demand to relocate authorship back in her body, where it was always supposed to be.
