His fiction repeatedly shows how easily humans become instruments of slogans. Here, he offers a scruffy alternative ethic: permission to be alive without turning it into a job. Not nihilism, exactly - more like humane minimalism. If life is fragile and history is insane, maybe the most radical stance is to refuse the cult of significance and insist on small, unserious freedoms.
