Art & Creativity Quote by Chris Ware

"I think it has most to do with the way in which a story is told, whether it feels real either via the music of the telling or the 'honesty' of the story"

About this Quote

Ware is smuggling a manifesto into a modest observation: realism isn’t a property of plot, it’s a property of delivery. In his phrasing, “feels real” is the bar, and it’s deliberately squishy. He’s not pledging allegiance to documentary accuracy; he’s defending an aesthetic effect. The two routes he offers - “the music of the telling” and the “honesty” of the story - map cleanly onto what Ware’s own comics do so well: formal control on one hand, emotional candor on the other.

“Music” is a sly word choice from an artist often treated as hyper-engineered. Ware’s pages can look like blueprints, yet he insists on rhythm: pacing, repetition, panel size, silence, the way a sentence lands when it’s boxed into a caption and forced to sit next to an image. The subtext is that craft creates credibility. A story can be wildly invented, but if its timing and tonal consistency are right, our brains grant it the dignity of truth.

Then he puts “honesty” in scare quotes, which is the tell. He knows honesty is a performance too: curated, edited, sometimes retrofitted after the fact. That tiny punctuation mark keeps the statement from turning into moral self-help. It suggests that what readers want isn’t confession, but the sensation that the work isn’t lying to them about how it feels to be a person.

Contextually, this sits in a comics world long split between “literary” realism and genre spectacle. Ware is arguing for a third lane: truth as an artifact of structure and tone, not subject matter.
