Art & Creativity Quote by Glenn Frey

"I think musicians and artists are the most philanthropic people I know. Their charity record of the music business would hold up to the work of anybody"

About this Quote

Frey is doing two things at once: defending his tribe and quietly lobbying for a different way to read celebrity culture. In a world quick to treat rock stars as self-indulgent brands, he flips the frame and insists on a less marketable truth: the music business, for all its egos and excess, has a serious track record of showing up when it counts.

The wording is revealing. “I think” softens the claim just enough to sound like lived experience rather than a press-release boast. “Most philanthropic people I know” is intimate and comparative, not cosmic; Frey isn’t declaring artists morally superior to everyone, he’s saying that, in his proximity, the giving is unusually consistent. Then comes the tell: “their charity record.” Record keeps the argument in measurable territory. It’s not about good vibes or heartfelt benefit-concert speeches; it’s receipts, gigs played for free, causes bankrolled, networks activated. In a business built on attention, philanthropy becomes a parallel economy: musicians can convert visibility into immediate fundraising in ways many industries simply can’t.

There’s subtext, too, about misrecognition. Artists are often judged by spectacle (the tour bus, the backstage myth) rather than the less photogenic labor of donating, organizing, and lending cultural capital to a cause. Frey, coming from an era of mega-benefits and activist pop (the 70s onward), is also defending the legitimacy of “showbiz charity” against the sneer that it’s just PR. His point is blunt: even if you dislike the theater, the outcomes can compete with “the work of anybody.”
