"I think that in a year I may retire. I cannot take my money with me when I die and I wish to enjoy it, with my family, while I live. I should prefer living in Germany to any other country, though I am an American, and am loyal to my country"
About this Quote
The Germany preference is the sharpest piece of subtext. In the early 20th century, choosing Germany carries the whiff of cosmopolitan sophistication and personal comfort, but also a loaded ethnic and cultural undertow: Houdini (born Ehrich Weiss to Hungarian Jewish parents) is negotiating identity in public. “Though I am an American, and am loyal to my country” reads like preemptive damage control, a patriotism clause stapled to a personal desire. It’s the immigrant-era performance of belonging: you’re allowed to have tastes, even to dream of elsewhere, as long as you swear you’re not disloyal.
What makes the quote work is its uncharacteristic transparency. Houdini’s stage life thrived on misdirection; here he offers a candid exit plan, then immediately hedges it. Even offstage, he’s managing the audience. The escape artist can’t fully escape being read.
