Daily Inspiration Quote by Chester Gould

"I usually start with a repulsive character and go on from there"

About this Quote

Gould’s line reads like a creative confession, but it’s really a thesis statement for American pulp morality: start with someone you don’t want to be, then build a world that explains why. As the creator of Dick Tracy, he wasn’t sketching “repulsive” villains just for cheap thrills. He was engineering instant readability. In a comic strip, you have seconds to establish stakes, and disgust is the fastest shortcut the eye has. A hook nose, a warped grin, a grotesque silhouette: you don’t need backstory to feel the threat.

The subtext is colder. Repulsion is a tool of social sorting. Gould’s rogues’ gallery turns criminality into a visible condition, a face you can recognize on sight. That’s efficient storytelling, and it also flatters the audience’s sense of safety: evil looks like “them,” not like your neighbor, your boss, or the cop on the corner. In the Depression-to-postwar era Gould worked in, with anxieties about urban crime, corruption, and “undesirables” circulating through tabloids and radio, the strip’s exaggerated ugliness functioned as a moral public service announcement. It reassured readers that the world still had clear categories.

It also hints at how Gould understood humor. His repulsive characters aren’t merely scary; they’re theatrical, almost carnival grotesques. That exaggeration lets violence and punishment land without choking the strip in realism. Start with the repulsive, and you can push the story to extremes while keeping the reader comfortably certain who deserves what’s coming.
