Motherhood Quote by William Trevor

"I value mothers and motherhood enormously. For every inattentive or abusive mother in my fiction, I think you'll find a dozen or so who are neither"

About this Quote

Trevor’s line is a preemptive strike against the lazy reading that turns fiction into a referendum on an author’s morals. He knows exactly how audiences work: show one cruel mother on the page and someone will accuse you of misogyny, or of “having issues,” as if literature were merely a diagnostic tool. So he frames his work statistically, almost wryly, to underline a basic truth about storytelling: dysfunction is loud, ordinary care is quiet.

The intent isn’t to deny the existence of monstrous mothers in his fiction; it’s to insist that they’re not the whole picture, and not even the dominant one. “Inattentive or abusive” are charged descriptors, the kind that flare up a reader’s indignation. Trevor concedes them, then counters with “a dozen or so who are neither,” an offhand ratio that suggests an unglamorous majority: women doing the daily, morally complicated labor of raising children without sainthood or scandal. That “neither” matters. He’s not promising angelic mothers, just mothers who aren’t reduced to cruelty as a plot device.

Contextually, Trevor wrote in a tradition (Irish, Catholic-tinged, family-saturated) where motherhood is both revered and policed. His fiction often anatomizes domestic life with surgical restraint; pain shows up, but so does endurance. The subtext is a defense of realism: attentive mothers rarely drive plots because competence doesn’t explode. Trevor is asking to be read with adult vision, where care can be present without being sentimental, and where a writer can depict harm without secretly endorsing it.
