Daily Inspiration Quote by Theo Van Gogh

"I want to warn against the Fifth Column which is trying to hinder our free way of life in Holland"

About this Quote

Van Gogh isn’t warning about an abstract threat; he’s lighting a flare over a country that prides itself on tolerance while quietly betting that tolerance will never be stress-tested. “Fifth Column” is loaded Cold War vocabulary: it frames the danger as internal, disguised, and parasitic, not a rival nation you can negotiate with. That choice is the point. He’s not asking for policy nuance, he’s trying to make complacency feel like complicity.

The phrase “our free way of life in Holland” does two things at once. It wraps liberal freedoms in possessive language (“our”), drawing a boundary around who gets to claim the national “we,” and it makes “freedom” sound like a lifestyle brand that can be “hindered” by the wrong neighbors. Coming from a filmmaker known for provocation, the intent reads less like statesmanship and more like cultural theater: force the audience to pick a side, then watch who hesitates.

Context matters. In the early 2000s Netherlands, anxieties over immigration, integration, and Islamist extremism collided with a national self-image built on permissiveness and blunt speech. After 9/11 and the rise (and assassination) of Pim Fortuyn, public debate hardened into tests of loyalty. Van Gogh’s warning plugs directly into that mood: the fear that openness is being exploited from within. The subtext is an accusation aimed at both the perceived infiltrators and the Dutch elite who, in his view, confuse civility with surrender. It’s effective because it weaponizes a cherished identity: “free” becomes fragile, and fragility becomes permission to polarize.
