Time & Perspective Quote by Georg Solti

"I wanted to get away from my past and everything connected with it"

About this Quote

A simple sentence hides a lifetime of urgency. Georg Solti was formed by brilliance and by rupture: a Hungarian Jewish prodigy schooled by Bartok, Dohnanyi, and Kodaly, then a young artist forced into exile by fascism and war. The past he wanted to escape was not just childhood or early missteps; it included persecution, loss, and the years when history put his ambitions on hold. In Switzerland during the war he survived as a pianist, even winning a major competition, but his real vocation was conducting. After 1945 he rebuilt from almost nothing, taking posts in Munich, Frankfurt, Covent Garden, and eventually Chicago, becoming one of the defining conductors of the 20th century.

The drive to get away is not mere flight. It is a choice to refuse the identity assigned by trauma and circumstance. For an artist, that refusal takes the form of reinvention through work: new repertoire, new institutions, a new country, even a new language. Solti’s hallmark intensity and rigor on the podium can be read as a disciplined answer to chaos. Tempo, balance, and structure become a way to impose order where history had torn it away.

Yet getting away from the past is never absolute. An exile carries home in his ear. Solti championed Bartok and other Central European voices even as he became a British citizen and an American institution. He also made epochal recordings of German music, above all Wagner, turning a repertoire heavy with cultural baggage into a field for fearless, unsentimental mastery. That act contains a paradox: the farther he traveled from his origins, the more clearly he illuminated them.

The line, then, speaks to the artistic will to begin again. Memory remains, but it does not dictate. What determines the future is the courage to step past the wreckage and build something larger, louder, and more alive than what tried to silence you.
