He’s not documenting a person; he’s drafting a figure into service for his story.

The intent is practical and self-protective. As “a Navy officer writing about Navy problems,” he needs a character who can move through a male institution and expose its seams. Nurses, especially in mid-century military narratives, are granted a peculiar access: intimate, trusted, present in crisis, and still marked as outsiders. By shifting her branch, he smooths the logistics and keeps his subject squarely in his chosen arena.

The subtext is more complicated than the chuckle suggests. “Lovely” risks reducing the nurse to an aesthetic asset, and “popped her into” treats identity like wardrobe. Yet “she has done very well for herself” hints at the alchemy of art: the invented version gains agency, reputation, maybe even immortality in a way the original person never asked for.
