Time & Perspective Quote by Igor Stravinsky

"I was born out of due time in the sense that by temperament and talent I should have been more suited for the life of a small Bach, living in anonymity and composing regularly for an established service and for God"

About this Quote

Stravinsky, the great disrupter of 20th-century music, fantasizes here about being a “small Bach” precisely because he knows he wasn’t allowed that kind of life. The line is a sly self-portrait: not a denial of genius, but a confession of discomfort with the modern cult of the famous artist. He frames his own career as a kind of historical miscasting, as if the era demanded a public provocateur while his inner wiring preferred routine, craft, and a job with clear expectations.

“Small Bach” is doing heavy work. It’s humble on the surface, but it’s also a pointed critique of a world where composers are expected to be brands. Bach stands for anonymous function: music as liturgy, weekly deadlines, service to an institution and a metaphysical order. Stravinsky’s “temperament and talent” nods to his well-known appetite for discipline, structure, and inherited forms (especially in his neoclassical period), a sensibility often obscured by the riotous legend of The Rite of Spring. He’s reminding us that the scandal was partly circumstantial: Paris wanted spectacle; he delivered sound.

The subtext is almost theological: modernity severed the old chain linking craft to communal purpose. Stravinsky’s wish isn’t escapist nostalgia so much as envy of a system where the composer’s ego is optional and the work is continuous. He’s mourning a lost anonymity that, paradoxically, might have made the music even more exacting.
