"I was invited to photograph Hollywood. They asked me what I would like to photograph. I said, Ugly men"
About this Quote
The intent is almost mischievously documentary. Cunningham isn’t saying she’s anti-beauty; she’s saying she’s pro-truth, and truth includes faces that don’t behave for the lens. “Ugly” here reads less like an insult than a strategy: a way to dodge the industry’s beauty protocol and point the camera at power without its costume. In a town built on casting and contouring, “ugly men” suggests the unvarnished architects of the dream - executives, fixers, gatekeepers - the people who rarely get turned into icons but who decide which icons exist.
Context matters: Cunningham came out of a modernist photographic tradition that prized clarity over glamour and was never especially interested in worship. As a woman photographing in a field and an industry dominated by male authority, the line also carries a subtle inversion of the usual gaze. Hollywood is used to women being the scrutinized objects; Cunningham flips the scrutiny onto men, and not the handsome leading ones. The subtext is a dare: if you want my eye, you don’t get to control what it sees.
