Daily Inspiration Quote by E. Howard Hunt

"I would say this in terms of my career, that my career provided me with everything that I wanted, and I think a man is fortunate if he can say that at the end of his life"

About this Quote

There is something almost antiseptically neat about Hunt’s satisfaction: a life measured not by virtue or public good, but by the private ledger of wants fulfilled. The sentence is built like a retirement toast, all soft qualifiers ("I would say", "in terms of") that narrow the moral field until it’s safe to praise yourself without naming what, exactly, you did. It’s a rhetorical laundering. By the time he arrives at "fortunate", the reader is nudged to treat luck as the story, not choice.

The subtext is a familiar American one: work as destiny, career as character. Hunt borrows that respectable framework and slides his own biography into it, asking to be evaluated the way we evaluate bankers or generals - by outcomes, not ethics. Calling himself "a man" rather than, say, an agent or operative universalizes the claim, smoothing over the very particular historical grime attached to his name.

Context does the heavy lifting. Hunt wasn’t just any "criminal"; he was a CIA veteran and a central Watergate figure, a symbol of how state power and clandestine culture can curdle into lawbreaking with patriotic self-justification. Read against that backdrop, "everything that I wanted" lands less like contentment than confession: the appetite was always the point. The line’s quiet audacity is that it tries to end the argument. If he got what he wanted, and can say it calmly at the end, then the rest - consequences, victims, democratic damage - becomes an externality, someone else’s problem.
