Art & Creativity Quote by Derek Bailey

"I wouldn't want to be ideological about it but I think of it as being the best way to approach this kind of playing. I don't think it works in other music, other kinds of playing"

About this Quote

Bailey’s shrugging refusal to be “ideological” is itself a kind of manifesto: an anti-manifesto built for a scene that was constantly being accused of having one. As a musician who practically defined non-idiomatic improvisation, he knew the trap: the minute a method hardens into a doctrine, it stops being improvisation and turns into a style you can buy, teach, and eventually parody. So he leads with humility, then slips in the firm claim anyway: this is “the best way” for this kind of playing.

The subtext is boundary-setting without the romance of purity. Bailey isn’t arguing that his approach is morally superior; he’s saying it’s functionally superior within a specific ecosystem of risk. In free improvisation, the point is to keep the music from congealing into habitual patterns - to make decisions in real time that can’t be outsourced to genre memory. Calling it “the best way” is less about technique than about maintaining a certain temperature: alert, responsive, slightly unstable.

His second sentence tightens the frame. “I don’t think it works in other music” isn’t a diss of other forms; it’s a critique of category errors. Jazz standards, baroque ensembles, pop sessions - these rely on shared constraints, agreed-upon roles, repeatable language. Bailey’s approach can read there as self-indulgence or sabotage, because those musics aren’t trying to solve the same problem. He’s defending specificity: a practice designed for one context shouldn’t be exported like a lifestyle brand.
