Art & Creativity Quote by Jerzy Kosinski

"I write for a certain sphere of readers in the United States who, on average, watch seven and a half hours of multichannel television per day"

About this Quote

Kosinski’s line lands like a confession that’s also an indictment: he’s not courting “America,” he’s targeting a nation anesthetized by screens. The specificity of “seven and a half hours” is the tell. It’s statistical, almost market-research cold, and that chill is the point. He’s adopting the language of ratings culture to describe literature, flattening the old romance of the solitary reader into a demographic slice. The joke is that he sounds like an ad man describing an audience segment, not a novelist describing a sensibility.

The subtext is both strategic and contemptuous. If your average day is dominated by multichannel television, you don’t just have less time to read; your attention has been trained in a different tempo: faster cuts, clearer stakes, louder cues. Kosinski implies he writes with that conditioning in mind, suggesting a kind of literary survival tactic - prose designed to punch through distraction, to compete on the same battlefield as cable. At the same time, there’s a faint self-mockery: the “certain sphere” is a polite euphemism for a public that might not be reading much at all.

Context matters. Kosinski, a Polish-born American novelist who built his reputation in a media-saturated late 20th-century U.S., understood celebrity, controversy, and the entertainment economy. This line reads as a bleakly funny adaptation to that ecosystem: if culture is measured in viewing hours, the writer either becomes legible to that measurement or becomes invisible.
