Parenting & Family Quote by Gloria Steinem

"I'd like to be played as a child by Natalie Wood. I'd have some romantic scenes as Audrey Hepburn and have gritty black-and-white scenes as Patricia Neal"

About this Quote

Steinem slips a stiletto into the culture’s softest spot: the way women are forever being cast, edited, and re-cast for public consumption. On its face, the line is a playful fantasy of self-portraiture through movie stars. Underneath, it’s a critique of the limited “roles” available to women in the popular imagination, even (especially) for a woman whose real life was defined by refusing roles altogether.

The three actresses aren’t random. Natalie Wood cues the myth of feminine innocence and early glamour: the child star whose image was managed before she could manage herself. Audrey Hepburn signals a different cage, the romantic ideal packaged as refinement - charm so polished it becomes a kind of restraint. Patricia Neal, famous for steely performances and for surviving a near-fatal stroke, brings in the bruising reality: grit, consequence, the camera unafraid of a woman’s toughness and damage.

The joke lands because Steinem’s public identity was constantly flattened into optics: “pretty feminist,” “media darling,” “poster girl.” She answers by directing her own biopic, toggling between archetypes to show how absurd it is that a woman’s complexity must be parceled into separate genres to be legible. That black-and-white detail matters too: it’s a nod to seriousness, documentary truth, and a time when “gritty” was coded as masculine prestige. Steinem is saying: if you insist on narrating me through Hollywood, at least admit you’re choosing a costume, a lens, a script - not a person.
