Daily Inspiration Quote by Michel de Montaigne

"If a man urge me to tell wherefore I loved him, I feel it cannot be expressed but by answering: Because it was he, because it was myself"

About this Quote

Love, for Montaigne, is not a courtroom claim you can back with evidence. It is a fact of recognition. The line refuses the neat, modern demand that every attachment be justified with a list of traits: kind, funny, ambitious, good in a crisis. Instead he offers a taut loop of identity: I loved him because he was irreducibly himself, and because I was irreducibly me. The phrase is disarmingly simple, but it smuggles in a sharp philosophy of human bonds: the deepest loyalties aren’t chosen like products; they happen at the level where personality, timing, and temperament click into place.

The context is Montaigne’s famous essay on friendship, written in the shadow of his intense bond with Etienne de La Boetie, whose early death left Montaigne with a lifelong absence he kept turning over on the page. Renaissance moral writing often treated friendship as a virtue you cultivate for social harmony. Montaigne makes it stranger and more intimate: friendship as an event, almost a miracle, that bypasses calculation. His syntax does the work. “Because it was he” denies explanation in the language of reasons; “because it was myself” admits the lover’s complicity, the way affection exposes our own contours. It’s not romantic inevitability so much as a candid acceptance of contingency: love can be real without being rational, and the demand to rationalize it misses what makes it profound.
